Lt Michael Levy served in the
6th Arkansas Infantry, Co E, the "Dixie Grays."
Lt Levy and his brother, Julius, both enlisted as privates. Julius enlisted in Co A, the "Capital Guards." Julius was killed at the battle of Shiloh in April of 1862. At least 8 other Jewish Confederates died at Shiloh. Michael survived, and was promoted to Fourth Corporal, then Sergeant. He was detailed by the Ordnance Department. By July 8, 1862, Levy was promoted to Lieutenant and reported to the Chief of Ordnance at the depot at Okalona, Mississippi. He continued to serve in the Artillery Corps but was detailed as an ordnance officer.
