Robert Crittenden Newton was an attorney and Confederate officer during the War Between The States.  He was educated at the Western Military Institute in Tennessee.  During the Secession Crisis of 1861, he traveled the State to gather support for secession.  Elected Lieutenant in the 18th Arkansas Infantry, CSA, in July of 1861, he was promoted to Assistant Adjutant General for Major General Thomas Carmichal Hindman in January of 1862, and served at Prairie Grove.  He also served as Commander of the 5th Arkansas Cavalry, during the Helena and Little Rock Campaigns and Attack on Pine Bluff, and as a Staff Officer for the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederate States Army.  After the War, he resumed his law practice, was a commissioner to authorities in Washington to secure representation for Arkansas during Reconstruction, and became Brigadier General in charge of State Troops during the Brooks-Baxter Affair.

Robert was a highly respected member of the Little Rock Community, and after the War, was active in caring for fellow Confederate Veterans and cemeteries. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock.

The Little Rock Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is named for Robert. The General Robert C Newton Camp #197 is the oldest SCV Camp in the Arkansas Division, as well as the oldest continually active SCV Camp West of the Mississippi River, dating back as early as the late 1890s.
